Brazilian directors André Peniche and Ricardo Spencer unite to restore unseen footage of the indie rock legends.
Eleven years after Sebadoh's 2014 Brazilian tour, a unique visual record has finally surfaced. The music video for "Love You Here", co-directed by André Peniche and Ricardo Spencer, premieres today. This release represents a rare milestone as it features the creative union of two of Brazil's most prominent music video directors joining forces to rescue a project once thought impossible.
The story begins in 2014. Ricardo Spencer conceived a guerilla-style shoot at the iconic Edifício Copan in São Paulo just hours before the band was set to play at Red Bull Station. The goal was to place Sebadoh in a distinctly urban Brazilian setting. To enhance the aesthetic, the set featured a red Giannini Tremendão amplifier (loaned by musician Rita Oliva, known as Papisa) and a 1967 Apollo Giannini guitar. The guitar belongs to André Peniche and appears as an easter egg in almost all his video productions.
The ambitious concept involved filming the band on the 32nd floor using a drone piloted from a neighboring building. Technology at the time created significant hurdles. Drone batteries lasted only two minutes, which allowed for merely thirty seconds of actual filming time per flight. Spencer managed the drone site while Peniche stayed with the band to direct them from inside the apartment.
Technical limitations and strict time constraints resulted in raw footage deemed insufficient at the time.
The material remained unfinished for years.
The fate of the video changed in 2022 in Finland. André Peniche, living in Helsinki since 2020, met Lou Barlow at a Dinosaur Jr. concert. Their conversation sparked memories of that afternoon at the Copan. Peniche felt he could finally finish the piece by approaching the footage with a fresh perspective. Following discussions with Spencer between 2022 and 2024, Peniche took on the task of editing the material.
Working during his free time between writing feature films in Helsinki, Peniche finalized the edit in August 2025. The result differs from Spencer's original vision yet stands on its own merits. With the band's blessing, "Love You Here" serves as a testament to artistic persistence and marks the only direct collaboration between Spencer and Peniche.
Ricardo Spencer and André Peniche have extensive portfolios that have shaped the aesthetic of alternative music. Collectively, they have created videos and sessions for artists such as Jupiter Maçã, Garotas Suecas, Mac DeMarco, Sebadoh, Rita Lee, Aurora, Pitty, Criolo, Cachorro Grande, Emicida, Vanguart, Sandy, Thunder & os Devotos DNSA, Johnny Hooker, Liniker, Pélico & Catto, and Maglore.
Notably, both directors hold other unreleased sessions from the same era (Sebadoh by Spencer and Mac DeMarco by Peniche) that have yet to see the light of day.
